Where to start when selecting a Trainer.
In the Australian Racehorse Trainers Directory you will find links to Trainers profile pages and web sites where you can learn about Racehorse Trainers in Australia.
There's three key factors to consider when selecting a Racehorse Trainer.
Honesty. Your trainer will have control of your racehorse and the accounts that are sent out to you and other owners each month. There will be charges for vet products, transport, track fees ect ect and Its very important that you have total trust in them and the way they conduct their business.
I have been involved in a few horses and my tips are,
Go tho the stables and check out the operation for yourself. Look for a professional setup with quality gear. Once you have decided on your trainer my next tips a must in my opinion if possible. Go to the races when the trainer has a horse racing and approach some owners who are racing a horse with the trainer and ask a few questions. Do this as many times as you can. End result if you speak to numerous owners who are more than happy to recommend the trainer and the way they handle their business your off to a good start.
Horsemanship. Your trainer needs to be a horseman who knows the thoroughbred and its workings, a good eye for conformation and pedigree helps when selecting a prospective purchase. A horseman can also asses a horses fitness and know when a horse is at its peak. The trainer needs to be able to train winners and place a horse where it can win. Checking a trainers recent starters or overall statistics can give you a better picture.

Communication. Its important to be able to communicate with your trainer and nice to find out if there is regular emails or phone calls on your horses progress.
Ask the trainer who will be riding the horse trackwork as a good trackwork rider can a great influence on your horses winning potential.
Ask questions and maybe even make a list on what you expect from your trainer. Most of us race horses for enjoyment and with the thought of one day owning a champion. Do your homework and make your step into ownership is a happy one.
