Regal Lodge – An Introduction & History

Terrence John Robinson (Terry) was born on the 2 nd of January 1950 at Nowra Hospital . His relationship with horses started at the young age of 15 in the mid 1960's, as a regular track work rider for his late father, the Group 1 winning thoroughbred trainer and master trainer/reinsman of the standardbreds, Kevin John Robinson.

Being a family man, Kevin had carved a pathway for many of his children in the racing game, giving them the perfect start to a career with these majestic animals. Following in Kevin's footsteps, Terry has enjoyed great success as a standardbred reinsman but throughout his career has focused his attention on training the thoroughbreds. Kevin established Regal Lodge in 1950 and, with the help of his children, built Regal Lodge Racing Stables into one of the most renowned and successful country stables in the industry.

The Regal Lodge team has achieved this fame due to the ability to be able to not only cure horses with niggling leg and feet injuries but also get them to perform to the best of its ability through the natural beach work on 7 Mile Beach, on the stunning Shoalhaven Coastline. The beach work technique has provided the platform for the Robinson's success in the racing industry. The natural environment of the beach and the Robinson's techniques are a proven remedy, having achieved outstanding results, for example:

•  Kenbelle – Winner, Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks and Group 3 Queen of the Turf;

•  Mr Piper – Winner, Group 2 Frank Packer Plate;

•  Play Or Pay – Winner, Group 2 Frank Packer Plate and Group 3 Peter Pan Stakes;

•  Century Rein – Winner, Listed Canterbury Cup; and

•  Dance til Dawn – Winner, Group 3 Summer Cup.

Regal Lodge Racing Stables Today

Ongoing success:

Today Terry, along with his brother Anthony and Regal Lodge staff, has carried on the legacy of his late father, with continuing success in the competitive world of racing.

In the past year we have enjoyed watching all of our horses performing to the best of there ability. The stable has improved upon our previous season results and we continue to see outstanding improvements. Our percentage strike rate for the 2005/6 season was:

•  runners to earners – 41.8%; and

•  runners to winners – 12%.

Our facilities:

Situated at the picturesque Berry Showground, the stable is in a prime location for all of the horses' training needs and has close access to racecourses such as Nowra, Kembla Grange, Goulburn and Sydney tracks. Regal Lodge supply their own transportation to and from races.

Swimming facilities are located at Berry 's Broughton Creek and beach work is performed along the beautiful 7 Mile Beach , just 10 minutes drive from the stables. Using the local, natural facilities allows our horses to connect with nature, providing the perfect environment for their training.

The stable holds up to maximum of 25 horses. There are currently 36 horses (including unregistered yearlings) under Terry's name, with the average number of 20 horses in work at any time. Maintaining a small and tightly-managed team is an important part of the stables' success and allows the Robinsons to give their horses the perfect amount of hands-on attention.

The Robinsons continue to be known for their ability to cure horses with feet and leg problems due to the use of beach work at 7 Mile Beach. According to Terry, the beach work improves not only horses' leg issues, but also improves their temperament. We can report two recent success stories:

•  The Slam, a 5 year-old by Flying Spur, was sent to the stable in February 2006 and has since won two races from five starts with the Robinsons.

•  Danzability , a 3 year-old filly by Danehill Dancer, was recently sent to the stable. The filly has leg problems which were thought to be un-curable, but after seven weeks work on the beach the filly is thriving, and is predicted to have her first start next preparation.

Very much still a family business, the success of Regal Lodge is attributed to the dedication of our staff, whose long work hours and commitment to excellence are second to none.

The team consists of the owners and track work riders Terry and Anthony, Terry's wife and foreperson Monique Miller, stable-hand riders Jessica Vine and boom apprentice Peter Wells, long time stable hand Gary ‘Possum' Miles, as well as casual staff Michael, Simon and Dane Robinson. All are experienced horse men and women.
